Much laughter, Holiday cheer , great stories (and some really, really old photos!) were shared on December 17, 2015 as the Houston Metal Arts Guild celebrated the season and 20 years of serving the local metal arts community.  Old friends were reacquainted, some of whom had not seen each other in years, and new friendships were formed.  Several of HMAG’s founding members came to the party and described how HMAG began as “just an idea” put forth by a small group of students from the Glassell School of Art and the University of Houston Metals Department. (Some mention was made about a wild and crazy road trip to a Society of North American Goldsmiths conference that initially inspired the idea…!)

What started as an informal group of students along with a few others who shared a passion for metal eventually evolved into the non-profit entity that is HMAG today.  Through the past 20 years the Guild has remained a grass roots organization run by volunteers who have ensured that HMAG remains true to its core mission of furthering interest in the metal arts.  Along the way, the Guild has managed to support local metal artists by providing educational workshops, scholarships, exhibition opportunities and a community.

Now that the first 20 years has been celebrated, let’s look forward to what the Houston Metal Arts Guild will do in its next 20 years.
