June Workshop and Artist Lecture: Mechanical Playthings with Gary Schott

June Workshop and Artist Lecture: Mechanical Playthings with Gary Schott

“Eskimo Kisser No.2” by Gary Schott

Students in Gary Schott’s fast-paced workshop will be introduced to fabricating and implementing simple mechanisms in a two-day project. They will explore and discuss bearings, shafts, levers, cams, followers, and linkages. Fabrication methods and joining (basic and intermediate metalsmithing techniques) will be demonstrated and discussed as they pertain to the subject matter. However, we will use wood to make the main structural component for our project and discuss using cheap materials for model-making and prototyping. Additional topics such as gears, pulleys, and ratchets will be discussed as time permits. Students should expect to walk away with one mechanically functioning “plaything.”

Gary will give a presentation the evening prior to his workshop, where all members and any interested folks are invited to come out and meet him and learn more about his creative process!
